One day
The EUSR SHEA Drains & Sewers course is a CSCS‑accredited, one-day training course that includes all six core SHEA modules plus two specific to the drainage and sewerage industry. Developed with input from the National Association of Drainage Contractors (NADC), the course prepares delegates for safe and compliant work in drains, sewers, and highway excavation.
The course content and delivery specification has been developed through consultation with the drains and sewerage industry. There are eight modules (six core modules and 2 industry specific modules).
| Understanding our workplace responsibilities | Underpinning legal frameworks, definitions and their application in the workplace setting, including the responsibilities for both the individual (as an employee) and the employer. |
| Understanding the effects of our work on the working environment | Key environmental considerations in the workplace, and their impact as employees, on the sustainability of their environment. |
| Identifying and controlling risks | Helps the individual to identify and control risks and hazards and understand their role in preventing them through a range of positive and proactive health and safety behaviours. |
| Common hazards in the workplace | Develops the ability to both identify a range of common physical hazards and minimise their impact in the workplace, in line with CSCS requirements. |
| Occupational health hazards | Explains the meaning of the term 'occupational health' and develops the individual's understanding of a range of occupational health hazards and their requirements. It helps individuals identify, mitigate for, and minimise occupational health hazards in the workplace. |
| Responding to emergencies | Develops individuals' understanding of emergency response behaviours, the role of reporting, inspection, and enforcement of health & safety in the workplace. It also develops an individual's understanding of the impact on employee and employer of both poor/improving health and safety in the workplace. |
| Drains and Sewers | This module provides the individual with a broad understanding of the requirements for safe working in drains and sewers. It focuses on the known risks when working with drains and sewers, awareness of confined space working and its associated risks, the requirements for using different cleaning methods, and transferring and disposing of waste correctly. |
| Highway working and excavations (Drains) | This module provides the individual with an understanding of the processes and procedures required to work in the highway; this includes both public and private environments and creating a safe working environment through safe systems of work. The individual will know what to do in the case of an emergency. |
The course will be delivered through the context of the drains and sewerage industry.
Participants will complete a multiple-choice assessment. Successful candidates will be registered on the EUSR and awarded the SHEA Drains & Sewers card valid for 3 years.
To remain certified in this area, you will need to retake the SHEA Drains & Sewers course before the expiry date on your card.
The scheme is affiliated with the Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) allowing utility workers access to CSCS controlled sites for purposes of utilities work without the need to hold a separate card. The utilities industries share a common goal and commitment to robust mechanisms that enable all workers to demonstrate health and safety awareness and relevant skills and competences.
