The NG Person Substations Online Renewal course provides a concise but comprehensive refresher on substation safety, including impressed voltage awareness, in line with National Grid’s NSI 30 requirements.

This online renewal is designed specifically for individuals who already hold an in-date National Grid Person (Substations) authorisation and need to maintain their status for continued substation access. Delegates have up to 28 days to complete the e-learning and assessment, provided their qualification has not expired.

Who should Attend This Course

This course is for:

  • Individuals with a valid National Grid Person (Substations) authorisation issued since January 2020
  • Contractor employees requiring substation access authorisation renewal
  • Personnel involved in substation operations and maintenance

Prerequisites

  • Valid National Grid Person (Substations) authorisation
  • Completion of general health and safety awareness training (e.g., SHEA Power, CSCS)
  • Valid photo ID
  • Good understanding of spoken and written English.

What To Have With You To Attend The Course

Access to a laptop or PC computer with a webcam, microphone, and speaker, a stable internet connection and quiet space for the entirity of the course

Assessment

Candidates are assessed on their understanding of substation safety and the risks related to impressed voltage. A minimum score of 85% is required to achieve a pass.

Course Content

The renewal programme delivers essential updates and confirmations of competency through the following modules:

Substation Safety Refresher

  • Review of core hazards, including impressed voltage
  • Safe behaviour and site expectations

NSI 30 Responsibilities

  • Updated guidance on National Safety Instruction (NSI) 30
  • How NSI 30 applies to Person-level duties in substations

EUSR Requirements

  • Understanding what is required for re-registration
  • Ensuring eligibility remains valid

Knowledge Assessment

  • Online test covering substation safety, hazard control, and NSI 30 knowledge
