Course details
Prepare for senior responsibility in managing impressed voltage risks with our EUSR-approved training for Engineering Control Persons (ECP) and Engineering Authorised Persons (EAP). This specialist course equips managers and authorised persons with the technical knowledge and procedural control skills needed to safely manage impressed voltage risk on National Grid and UK utility projects.
Why ECPs and EAPs Need Impressed Voltage Training
If you’re performing the role of ECP or EAP, you are responsible for authorising, managing, and supervising safe systems of work where impressed voltage hazards may arise.
This course ensures you fully understand:
	- The nature and risks of impressed voltage
- Your legal and procedural responsibilities
- How to safely authorise and control work near HV systems
- Compliance with National Grid and utility safety rules
Who Should Attend?
This course is designed for:
	- Engineering Control Persons (ECP)
- Engineering Authorised Persons (EAP)
- Senior project managers overseeing HV utility works
- National Grid contractors/subcontractors in control roles
- Managers authorising safe systems of work for HV projects
What You’ll Learn
On completion, you will:
	- Understand impressed voltage principles relevant to HV works
- Identify IV hazards and their effect on safe systems of work
- Apply procedures to control impressed voltage risks
- Fulfil responsibilities as an ECP or EAP under National Grid standards
- Support safe issue of permits to work and task authorisation
- Demonstrate compliance with EUSR and utility safety rules
Course Overview
	- This training addresses the control of Impressed Voltages in high voltage environments.
- To provide background and technical awareness.
- Highlighting the risks involved & mitigating control measures.
- To identify responsibilities of designers and key site personnel.
- To identify Best Practice, and relevant guidance notes and procedures.
- To raise the awareness and understanding of ALL THOSE ENGAGED IN THE DELIVERY OF A PROJECT – with regards to Impressed Voltages. Where and how they can occur, and what the dangers are. Actively work to negate ALL incidents relating to Impressed Voltages.
- To equip Supervisors and Managers working on or near equipment where Impressed Voltages may present a danger - with the knowledge to be able to avoid an accident or incident.
- Talk through the correct protocol, documents and permits needed to Safely Work on National Grid systems.
- To understand the roles of Earthing Control Person (ECP) and Earthing Application Person (EAP) and when these apply
- To apply Impressed Voltage Drain Earths (IVDE)’s to busbars and associated equipment.
Course Content
	- This training will provide the information required for supervisors and managers  to be able to recognise circumstances or situations where an Impressed voltage may be apparent on any Project.
- It will equip all those managing the site with the knowledge to be able to avoid the dangers presented by Impressed voltages.
- It will enable supervisors and managers to recognise potentially dangerous situations and report concerns to the appropriate responsible person.
- It will raise awareness of working in close proximity to High Voltage Cables, Overhead Power Lines, Substation and Power Generation equipment.
- It will raise awareness of National Grid Working Practices and Supplier Requirement 234 (was TP234)
- Prior to issue of the HVSCC it is the Principal  Contractor’s responsibility to ensure a Safe System of Work to control Impressed Voltage is in place.
- This course identifies the requirements for Impressed  Voltage Earthing as applied to HV Plant used on standard Air Insulated Switchgear (AIS) substations.
Assessment
Delegates complete a short multiple-choice assessment to confirm understanding.
Certificates
Successful participants are awarded the EUSR Impressed Voltage Awareness (ECP/EAP) certification, valid for 1 year.
Certified individuals are registered on the Energy & Utility Skills Register (EUSR) and receive an EUSR smart card, recognised by National Grid and the utility sector. T
To remain certified in this area, you will need to retake the assessment before the expiry date on your card.
Pre-Requisites
National Grid Competent Person Substations.
