Course Overview

Category 2: Implement Safe (Digging) Excavating Practices covers the minimum training and assessment required for those working to safely excavate and maintain holes and trenches using both hand tools and hand-held power tools including:

Understanding underground services and utility drawings
Safe digging methods and equipment use (including CAT & Genny overview)
Risk assessment and safe systems of work for excavations
Avoidance of utility strikes and incident prevention
EUSR Category 2 certification process

Course Content

How to correctly plan and prepare – PPE, Risk assessment, Ground type identification.
Your responsibilities
How to interpret utility drawings and line search documents to identify underground services
Safe digging techniques to carry out and maintain excavations.
How to identify the dangers and hazards associated with excavations
How to locate, detect and identify services inside an excavation

Assessment

A variety of activities, oral, multiple choice, and written questions plus onsite assessment.

Please note this course requires delegates to physically dig a small excavation.

Certificates

On successful completion, candidates receive EUSR Category 2 (CAT2) registration (valid 3–5 years). To remain certified in this area, you will need to retake the assessment before the expiry date on your card.

Prerequisites

There are no formal entry requirements however a basic level of written and spoken English is required.
