The CITB Temporary Works Supervisor Training Course (TWSTC) is a comprehensive one-day training course designed for those who are involved in managing or supervising temporary works on construction sites. It provides essential knowledge and skills aligned with BS 5975 to ensure safe, compliant, and effective temporary works supervision.

This temporary works supervisor training course is part of CITB’s Site Safety Plus scheme and leads to a CITB renewable 5-year certificate. It is suitable for both newcomers and experienced personnel seeking to formalize or refresh their understanding of the temporary works supervisor (TWS) role.

  No previous qualifications are required, though familiarity with construction site processes is helpful.

What You Will Learn

During the temporary works supervisor training, you will cover:

• Legal responsibilities and the role of other parties in temporary works
• Understanding BS 5975:2019 and BS 5975-1:2024
• Temporary works procedures and key safety considerations
  Throughout the course, technical awareness is highlighted, although the primary focus is on the supervisory and procedural aspects of temporary works.

Course details

CITB TWSTC (Temporary Works Supervisor Training Course) is a one-day course for are designed to help those on site who have a responsibility for supervising all forms of temporary works. The course seeks to improve the knowledge of this role and the temporary works environment. 

Important notes

• The main aim of this course is to focus on the processes involved in temporary works, commonly with particular attention on the role of the TWS.
• This course is not a temporary works technical awareness training courses, although there are elements of technical awareness that are signposted throughout and that must be included in the course exercises.
• Attendance does not confer competency as a TWS; this comes from a mixture of education, training, experience, and should be judged by an appropriate senior individual, usually referred to as the designated individual (DI).
• Training is considered an essential element of TWS competence.

Overview

This course has been developed in conjunction with several organisations, including the Temporary Works Forum and the HSE. We also offer the CITB TWCTC (Temporary Works Coordinator Training Scheme) instead.

Temporary works are a critical and important part of our works and require careful coordination. An accepted way of achieving this is through the adoption of the management process outlined in BS 5975-1:2024, which introduces the temporary works supervisor (TWS) as a key figure.

This course explains the role and its overall management context.

Temporary works on both smaller and larger sites can be high risk activities. Therefore, understanding the essentials of good risk and safety management, as outlined in BS 5975:2019, is relevant for projects of all sizes.

The course gives emphasis throughout to the importance of communication, co-ordination, co-operation, and competency (the '4Cs'), risk management, safety and business relations, allowing the (TWC) to:

• understand the need for and duties of the TWS.
• understand the role of others.
• have a detailed knowledge and understanding of BS 5975 in respect of this role.

Each delegate will receive Course Materials designed by our TW Experts and the CITB Mandatory Publications for this course.

This training is endorsed by BuildUK.

You gain a highly recognised qualification, which is valid for five years. To remain certified in this area, you will need to retake a course before the expiry date on your certificate, otherwise the full course will need to be retaken.

Entry Requirements

This TWSTC course runs over a full day and includes active participation, discussion, and case studies. While there are no formal entry requirements, delegates should ideally have a basic understanding of:

• Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974
• Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999
• Corporate Manslaughter and Corporate Homicide Act 2007
• Construction (Design and Management) Regulations (CDM) 2015
• Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998
• Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998
• The Personal Protective Equipment Regulations 1992
• The Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992
• The Work at Height Regulations 2005

A key issue for temporary works is health and safety, so delegates need to be prepared to discuss how health and safety legislation is relevant to temporary works, as well as which Approved Codes of Practice (ACOPs) and guidance notes may assist or contribute to safe practices in temporary works.

Delegates need to be prepared to discuss and explore all the core health and safety factors that are integrated into temporary works processes at all stages of a project, from initiation to closure.

They will need to have working knowledge of all associated legislation, specifically the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015 in terms of its intention and compliance.

Learners must also have a thorough understanding of health and safety principles and understand the importance of risk management, design considerations, inspection and testing and recording and monitoring requirements.

Previous completion of courses such as CITB SSSTS or SMSTS is beneficial, but not mandatory.

Learning Outcome & Assessment

At the end of this CITB temporary works supervisor course, learners will:

• Understand the responsibilities and duties of a Temporary Works Supervisor (TWS)
• Understand the overall temporary works process within the framework of BS 5975
• Learn how to effectively manage and supervise temporary works operations on site

The assessment includes:

• 3 mandatory exercises
• Learner and trainer reviews
• A 45-minute open book exam with 22 questions (19 multiple choice, 3 free text)
• A pass mark of 78% (21 out of 27)

Certification

Successful delegates will receive a CITB Temporary Works Supervisor Training Course (TWSTC) certificate, valid for 5 years. Delegates must re-take the course before expiration to maintain certification.
